Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon, April 4, from the Daugherty Memorial Chapel for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Jasper, 79 years, who passed away at her home Sunday morning, April 3. Rev. W. R. Zimmerman and Rev. M. C. Smith of Gainesville officiated. Mrs. Jasper was born June 18, 1869 in Grayson County. She married Charles Chester Cherry in 1884. Mr. Cherry was the son of John C. Cherry who printed the first newspaper in Galveston, the Galveston News, which is still in circulation. After the death of Mr. Cherry, she married M. F. Jasper, a rancher and moved to Erath County. They lived there until they moved to Nocona. Mr. Jasper, as a young man, drove herds of cattle along the Old Chisholm Trail to Wyoming. It was during these times that he made the acquaintance of Frank and Jesse James and other notable characters. He passed away in 1937, age 86 years. Mrs. Jasper had three sons by her first marriage, only one still living. An only daughter by her second marriage died in early youth. Mrs. Jasper united with the Methodist Church, age 14. Survivors are one son C. W. Cherry at Nocona, two grandchildren Cecil and Susie Cherry at Nocona. Interment was at Nocona Cemetery arranged by Daugherty Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Joe L. Janeway, Bill Billings, Pete Butts, A. S. Gilbert, Jerry Stout and Jack Haney. Source: Nocona News - April 8, 1949
