Funeral service for Mary Catherine Capps Payne Howard, 97, of Nocona, was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Chris Yost, pastor, officiating. Burial was held at 3:30 p.m. in the Nocona Cemetery under the direction of Davis Funeral Home. Mrs. Howard died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2007 in Henrietta. She was born Oct. 19, 1910 to James McVelian Capps and Beulah Mable Ritchie Capps near Stoneburg in Montague County. She attended school at Lone Star near Petrolia and in 1920 her parents and two brothers homesteaded near Trinidad, Colo. At 13, she cared for an elderly couple in Rocky Ford, Colo. to help support the family. In 1925 the family returned to Belcherville. She lived in Nocona or Montague County most of her life and had resided in Henrietta the last 12 years. She married Floyd Anderson Payne Sept. 27, 1930 in Waurika, Okla. He preceded her in death Aug. 17, 1958 in Bowie. She married Otis James Howard May 29, 1959 in Saint Jo. He preceded her in death Aug. 19, 1979 in Nocona. She was also preceded in death by her son, Clovis Alvin Payne April 2, 1990; one grandson, Terry Lynn Payne, Sept. 9, 2005; and siblings, Louis Capps, Reuben Capps, Ollie Barnett, Mable Whitwell, Thelma Fuller, Troy Capps and Roy Capps. She was a member of the Methodist Church for 81 years joining in 1926 in Belcherville. She was a member of the Nocona Order of the Eastern Star and a past Worthy Matron. She worked for Nocona Boot Company for more than 30 years. She also worked for Justin Leather Goods, Allison’s Variety Store and Lynn’s Sporting Goods in Nocona. She volunteered for the Nocona Chamber of Commerce and the Nocona Food Bank. Survivors include three sons, Jerry Lynn Payne of Henrietta, James Dennis Howard of Irving and Kenneth Ray Howard of Nocona; daughter-in-law, Tina Cate of Paris; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandsons; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Methodist Church Children’s Home in Waco, First United Methodist Church in Nocona or Henrietta or to a charity of choice.
