NOCONA – Roger Sawyer, 91, pilot, dairy farmer, life insurance and real estate salesman, rancher, husband, father and friend died Aug. 13, 2016.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Aug. 19 at the First United Methodist Church of Nocona.
At Roger’s request, his body was donated to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center for the advancement of science.
Roger was born Sept. 22, 1924, to Lyle and Leta Sawyer in Lewistown, MT. The family moved to the north Texas area when Roger was three years old.
After serving in the Army Air Corp. in WWII, he married Oleta Marie Henley of Saint Jo on Aug. 28, 1945 in Lincoln, NE.
From a young age it became evident that Roger loved people. He enjoyed those around him and listening to their stories. Roger carried a smile and warm greeting wherever he went and never met a stranger.
Roger was fascinated by philosophy, geography, and the natural sciences, and often led rousing family conversations on these as well as other topics.
Roger was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Oleta Marie (Henley) Sawyer; brothers, Russell and Archie, and parents Lyle and Leta Sawyer, Nocona.
Roger is survived by his three children, Roger Warren Sawyer, Dickinson, TX, Barbara Yeargin, Colleyville, Philip Sawyer, Kingwood, TX and their spouses; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, you may make memorials to the First United Methodist Church of Nocona, Hospice of Wichita Falls or a charity of your choice.
Scott-Morris Funeral Home will be helping with arrangements.
