NOCONA – Wilton Ross (Shorty) Underwood, 88, died on Nov. 25, 2017 in Nocona, TX. A visitation was from 6-7 p.m. Nov. 28 at Jerry Woods Funeral Home in Nocona. A service will be at 2 p.m. Nov. 29 at Jerry Woods Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Nocona Cemetery. Underwood was born on Oct. 1, 1929 to Tack and Nina Underwood in Montague County. In 1951 he joined the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and served until 1953. During his time in the service he marched in the Eisenhower Inaugural Parade. On Nov. 28, 1953 he married Alpha Reynolds. He moved back to Montague County and went to work in the oil field. After retiring, he went to work for Nocona Independent School District. After retiring from the school district, he worked a few years for Justin Leather Goods. Following the last retirement, Underwood took on lawn mower and bicycle repair in Nocona. He was a member of Nocona First Church of the Nazarene where he served several years on the board. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tack and Nina Underwood, four sisters and one brother. He is survived by his wife, Alpha Underwood, Nocona; daughter, Jo Ann Hale, Hooker, OK; two grandsons; two great granddaughters; two adopted great grandchildren; brother, Doyle Underwood, Iowa Park; sister, Doris Maxey, Wichita Falls; the Reynolds siblings; and numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.
