Lucia Sue Painter Johnson, 84, of Nocona, Texas, passed away on Thursday, May 13, 2021 in Dallas, Texas.

Visitation will be at 5 pm on Sunday, May 16, at Jerry Woods Funeral Home in Nocona. The funeral will be held at 2 pm on Monday, May 17, at Bethel Baptist Church in Nocona; Reverend Jerry Smith will conduct the service. The burial will follow at Nocona Cemetery.

Lucia was born in Wichita Falls, Texas to Hubert and Ruby Painter on December 20, 1936. She grew up in Nocona, graduating in the Class of 1955. After a year of college at Baylor University, she married Gerald E. “Jerry” Johnson on June 3, 1956 at Bethel Baptist Church in Nocona. She worked for Governor Allan Shivers while Jerry finished his degree at The University of Texas. They lived in Midland for a few years before moving back to Nocona to raise their children and be near their families and friends.

Lucia was an active member of Bethel: teaching Sunday school, singing in the choir and the quartet, and hosting bible studies, among other activities. She was a breast cancer survivor and led in the local efforts to support those with cancer and raise funds for cancer research. She loved playing bridge with friends and enjoyed baking; she was often asked to bake cakes for special occasions. Lucia worked for her father at Painter’s Food Store for many years before finishing her career working for Sewell-Uselton.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald “Jerry” Johnson and her brother, Jerry Painter, both of Nocona. She is survived by her sister, Gloria Wade of Nocona; her children, Lesli Johnson of Hurst, Texas and Craig Johnson and his wife, Leslie, of Dallas, Texas; seven grandchildren: Blake Gantz of Dallas, Texas; Dr. Emily Gantz of Birmingham, Alabama; Garrett Palla of Denton, Texas; Dr. William Johnson and his wife, Dr. Grace Johnson, of Houston, Texas; Benjamin Johnson and his wife Emily Johnson of Austin, Texas; Ryan Johnson and his wife McKenna Johnson of New York, New York; and Kevin Johnson of Austin, Texas; her great granddaughter, June Johnson of Houston, Texas, and five nephews and nieces and several cousins. The pallbearers will be her six grandsons.

Memorials may be given to Bethel Baptist Church. The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the staff at The Avenues of Park Forest, Dallas, Texas; caregivers Ann Howard and Pam Ross of Nocona, as well as the many extended family members and friends who loved her well throughout her life.
